28 December 2015 Bermuda Re/insurance BERMUDA’S RISING STARS What are your aspirations for the future? I don’t have a concrete path per se, but I would like to continue to be challenged with what I am able to provide to my organisation and ensure that I grow my knowledge and skillset. If you’d chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? It would be a tie between a veterinarian or hotel manager. Cindy Hooper Job title: Underwriter Company: Everest Re Bermuda Career path I am a property treaty underwriter for Everest Re Bermuda and have been here just over six years. I earned my CPCU and ARe designation in 2012 after having been in the accounting arena at AIG. My career started off in the hotel industry where I was able to gain experience working abroad. In 2007 I was an accounting supervisor at Chartis. All of these experiences have created the love I have for underwriting. I am also the vice chairperson/newsletter co-chair for the U40s Bermuda Group and the secretary for the CPCU Bermuda Chapter. Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? I love the people/relationship side of this business. It really has held true to the traditional face-to-face sort of transactions. As a close second, I enjoy numbers and the economic side of what is transacted, thus making reinsurance the perfect industry for me. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? Absolutely. It is an ever-evolving marketplace with lots of moving pieces. There are lots of ambitious young people in this industry, making it a very dynamic environment. There are lots of opportunities for those willing to work hard and learn from those with more experience. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Certainly, there are so many chances to learn from such great leaders. Additionally, with the soft market we are in, innovation and change are being embraced. It is a great place for young ambitious leaders to stand out.
