25 December 2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS BERMUDA’S RISING STARS I think so and I think it should be. Our industry offers such a vast variety of career paths for all sorts of skillsets and interests young professionals may have. Also our industry is constantly changing which creates many opportunities. It is a small interesting market in a highly relationship-driven business with possibilities to travel and network which in my view attracts young professionals. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Absolutely. I believe there are great opportunities in reinsurance for young professionals, whether it is on the underwriting, broking, risk management or finance side, etc. After acquiring a certain level of experience, the industry offers many career development opportunities. A great start can be to join a training programme with an underwriting or broking firm. Hannover Re’s training programme has set me up for the career I have started and I would highly recommend it. What are your aspirations for the future? To be able to have a positive influence on the way the industry continues to do business in this challenging and interesting market environment and making a valuable contribution towards the future success of Hannover Re. In the 11 years with Hannover I have held many different positions so I look forward to what the future holds. If you’d chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I am truly happy with where I am today, but I believe people are able to be good at a variety of things and I could see myself being successful doing work that involves creating things or helping others. From my experience as a trainer for some of our apprentices I also learned that I enjoy mentoring and teaching. Katrin Gelhar Job title: Underwriter, European property cat, Japan property cat and terrorism Company: Hannover Re (Bermuda) Career path I joined the Hannover Re Group right after high school, attending an apprenticeship programme which allowed me to explore many departments within Hannover Re. I am a certified insurance clerk and hold a BA in business economics. Since joining in 2004 as an apprentice I have held many different roles. After the training programme I joined the accounting department in 2006 where I was responsible for accounting of US property treaties as well as structured reinsurance. In 2008 I joined Hannover Re’s newly formed insurance-linked securities (ILS) division where I was involved in the structuring and admin of international ILS products including collateralised reinsurance. Since February 2013 I joined Hannover Re Bermuda handling Japanese and European property cat business as well as terrorism covers. Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? Similar to a lot of people in the industry I did not choose reinsurance right away and didn’t even know about it initially. I was looking for a career in international business enabling me to support myself. When looking for a job reinsurance seemed like the perfect mixture for me catering to my analytical skills as well as my interest to work in an international environment dealing with people from all over the world. I am very happy with where I ended up as it gives me the opportunity to work with so many different intelligent and interesting colleagues and clients. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals?
