23 December 2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS BERMUDA’S RISING STARS Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? I think the industry is still attractive to young professionals. The opportunities are not as vast but the access to talented and experienced professionals in other industries (banking, legal, accounting) makes it a worthwhile industry. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Most companies encourage their staff to further their education and provide opportunities to do so. If they see potential for growth the good companies are willing to promote. What are your aspirations for the future? As I continue to develop I would like to head an underwriting department with aspirations of running a reinsurance unit. If you’d chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? One of my passions is math. If I had to choose another career it would be that of a math teacher. Allan Fox Job title: Senior underwriter, North American property reinsurance Company: Markel Re Career path Allan Fox serves Markel re as senior underwriter, North American property reinsurance. Prior to the merger of Markel and Alterra in 2013, Fox worked as underwriter, having joined Alterra in 2006. He worked at XL Re from 2003 to 2006 as a catastrophe model analyst. He received his BA in mathematics from Atlantic Union College in 20012 and holds his CPCU, Certified Catastrophe Risk Analyst (CCRA) and ARe designations. Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? I graduated from Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, MA with a BA concentrating in mathematics and a computer science minor. After spending a year with the government Department of Statistics under the economic statistician I started as a catastrophe model analyst with XL Re. In 2006 I joined the start-up Harbor Point working as an underwriting associate. My role transitioned from modelling to underwriting and when Harbor Point merged with Max to form Alterra I was put on the US cat treaty team as an underwriter. Currently I serve as an AVP on the North American cat team. My responsibilities include underwriting a profitable book of cat treaty business with Florida and farm bureau business being a focus. I found the reinsurance industry very challenging and constantly changing. As a Bermudian starting my career there were lots of entry level opportunities.
