21 December 2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS BERMUDA’S RISING STARS What are your aspirations for the future? I don’t have an end goal or specific position in the back of my mind that I’m consciously working towards. I’m presently gaining experience across a range of asset classes and I am fortunate to work with people I get along with and whom I can learn from. I intend to work hard and learn as much as I can from them and see where it takes me. If you’d chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? Being a Bermudian and living in Bermuda the insurance/reinsurance industry would have been a logical choice. Perhaps an accountant, like my dad … or a professional triathlete like my sister Flora! Joel Duffy Job title: Assistant vice president portfolio manager, Butterfield Asset Management Company: Butterfield Why did you choose to go into industry? Through high school and university I had no idea what I wanted to do. After graduating university I joined the Butterfield Management Training Programme to gain exposure to a variety of departments and with the hope of gaining insight into what direction I wanted my career to head. After spending a year between four departments (audit, retail banking, operations, enterprise risk management), I had the choice of spending three months in two departments of my choosing. Butterfield Asset Management (BAM) was my first choice, mainly because I wanted to learn about the stock market. While I was there I quickly realised I enjoyed the work and was fascinated seeing how markets are moved and influenced by geopolitical and other news events. Showing enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, I was rewarded with a job offer from BAM just before my three months were up. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? Yes. Who wouldn’t want to work on the exciting side of banking (asset management)? Do you think the industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? This is a bit tricky. With regard to Bermuda specifically, there are certainly far more reinsurance and insurance sector career opportunities than there are in asset management. However, if you can get your foot in the door at an asset management company, the analytical and risk management skills you learn are extremely useful, not to mention transferable across a variety of industries.
