For ambitious young professionals who are committed and hard-working there will be opportunities to progress and achieve success. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Looking at my peers in the industry it is evident that the reinsurance industry offers great opportunities and career development to young professionals. The majority of my peers are currently working their way through or have completed various designations, often supported by their company, where others’ careers are progressing as they move through the ranks and are revelling in the success that they are achieving. Obviously, everyone has different outlooks and goals, and different companies have varying approaches to development. I am very fortunate to be part of a team that puts development on the forefront and supports me and my goals. Perhaps the challenge ahead is how the industry will adapt to continue to provide such opportunities to young professionals when you consider the current consolidation in the industry and the effect this will have looking forward. What are your aspirations for the future? In the short term, the first step for me is to finish my CPCU and ARe designations, which, if all goes to plan, should be done by the end of this year. I will also continue to learn what I can from the people I work with to ensure my knowledge base and understanding of the industry continues to grow. If the opportunity arises I would happily relocate to any one of our global offices—having worked in London, maybe New York or Singapore next? I am an ambitious person and have an idea of how I would like to see my career progress in the long term, and therefore I plan to make sure that I am continually learning and networking to ensure that all the pieces are in place for me to reach my goals. I had always dreamed of travelling the world, and as a result I initially pursued a career in the tourism industry. I was working for a hotel in London, which I enjoyed; however, it just didn’t feel like the right fit for me. I decided to explore my options, and having grown up in Bermuda, the reinsurance industry had always been in the back of my mind as a potential career path. I applied for and received an intern position at the Allied World office in London where I experienced everything from sitting in the Lloyd’s Box, working with people from various lines of business, to socialising with brokers. After the first day, the energy and dynamism of the industry had me hooked, and I noted many possibilities for travel. I knew at that moment that I wanted to pursue a career in underwriting. This experience is ultimately what led me to work for Allied World Re in Bermuda. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? I was once told that working in the reinsurance industry in Bermuda, and specifically underwriting, is Bermuda’s equivalent to being a movie star in Hollywood. Although this comment was a bit ‘tongue in cheek’, one can begin to understand their thoughts behind this as there is a sense of the glitz and glam working in the reinsurance industry as everyone seems to know who’s who and their achievements combined with the fact that there is a thriving social scene where you get the chance to ‘rub shoulders’ with your peers and role models, which definitely makes this an attractive industry for young professionals. However, in all seriousness, working in the reinsurance industry at any level is considered a very respectable career path and it also instils
