The majority of the reinsurance companies have a strong presence in these locations and when you are surrounded by this vibrant, fast-paced lifestyle, it is very easy to get drawn into it. Do you think the industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? I definitely think that this industry offers fantastic opportunities in all departments along with career development for young professionals. If you are eager, motivated and driven, you will never stop being recognised by your colleagues and clients. The industry is constantly changing and learning how to adapt to economic challenges. No two weeks have ever been the same for me. What are your aspirations for the future? Over the past six years working at AXIS, I gained some of the skills that I believe are required to succeed in this industry. I started out in the modelling department, meeting with the brokers and clients, learning how to analyse and evaluate submission packages and contracts. Over the past year I became more involved with the underwriting department and attained my CPCU designation. I hope to achieve my goal of becoming a well-known and respected reinsurance underwriter. I wish to develop my skills and produce positive margins for the company. If you had chosen a different profession/ career path, what would it have been? If I had not decided to pursue reinsurance as a career path, I would have chosen something that requires the need for client-based relationships. I enjoy a fast-paced environment, meeting requirements and the sense of accomplishment. BERMUDA’S RISING STARS Anna Card Job title: Assistant underwriter Company: AXIS Re Bermuda Career path Anna Card attended the University of Guelph and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. She began working for AXIS Re in 2009 as a reinsurance property catastrophe modeller and has recently become more involved with the underwriting department as an assistant underwriter. Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? Growing up in Bermuda, I had the pleasure of being exposed to the reinsurance industry from a young age. I went to university in Canada and when I returned to Bermuda for the summer and Christmas holidays, I was encouraged to find a job in order to build a decent resume. The pinnacle moment when I realised I wanted to work in reinsurance was when I participated in the Bermuda ACE Summer Internship Program. I had the opportunity to work on an underwriting project with my colleagues and learn what underwriting entailed. It appealed to me because it didn’t look like your standard office job, simply sitting behind your desk. You are given the opportunity to meet with clients and brokers, which allows you to form professional relationships. These relationships provide the foundations of a platform for future business and success. Consequently, reinsurance has always been something that I was involved in.
