10 December 2015 Bermuda Re/insurance to get some hands-on experience that is invaluable for finding out which area is of greatest interest to that individual. Many companies offer a diverse list of opportunities, such as marketing, accounting, modelling, underwriting, actuarial, claims ... there are so many options. Many companies have recognised the necessity of investing in and developing young talent. The longevity and success of our companies insist upon it. It is the youngest members who will bring exciting new ideas to our industry. It is also important not only that companies provide substantial educational and supportive roles to young professionals but also that these individuals take every opportunity that is made available. If the company you work for offers to support you with furthering your education, whether it be through on the job experiences, setting up mentor/mentee relationships or providing financial support to take exams: embrace it. These advantages can set you apart from your peers and ultimately will set your company apart from its peer group. Oh, and network like crazy. What are your aspirations for the future? If the past is any indication then the future will be full of big changes. How best to prepare for those changes? Raise our hand when opportunities to grow present themselves. Get out of our comfort zone. There are definite challenges ahead for us all within our industry but some important constants to remember, continue to build on our relationships, provide innovative solutions for our clients, while of course, always providing the very best in service: guaranteeing that our clients continue to come to Bermuda’s beautiful shores for their reinsurance needs. If you’d chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? Certainly nothing that involves beakers and a Bunsen burner! It would have to be a profession that is very people-oriented. Given my love of food, I believe I could have been a restaurateur. Actually a lot of people in the reinsurance business have at some point in their lives had a stint working at a restaurant, or a hotel. I’ve always believed the hospitality sector is a fantastic background to build upon, in addition to the technical skills necessary in our industry: we need to be able to connect with people as we are after all a service industry. BERMUDA’S RISING STARS Rachael Ashford Job title: Vice president, specialty reinsurance Company: Allied World Re Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? Organic chemistry class in university was one of those pivotal moments for me. I knew I needed to change direction. True to the saying, ‘when one door closes, another one opens’ when the reinsurance door opened for me, I dove straight in. I started as an assistant underwriter at Allied World, and every day brought new challenges and gave me the opportunity to work with and meet fascinating people. It’s the people in this industry that make this career an obvious choice for me. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? Bermuda offers a very unique advantage as it is one of the top reinsurance markets in the world. Many young professionals have grown up with a family member or know of at least someone in their community working in the industry. The schools offer business insurance study courses. This industry allows the young professional to go to school and come home and work at a company with global reach. There are also varied choices, within the industry, to suit almost any interest. To any individual looking for career development, who seeks to be challenged and who requires growth opportunities: I can’t think of a better industry to pursue. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Absolutely! Although entry level positions have become increasingly more competitive, this isn’t dissimilar to most other industries, but there are opportunities.
