Bermuda Reinsurance Leaders 2016

Do you believe Bermuda will remain a risk transfer hub? What has made it so successful in this sphere? Bermuda is the best place in the world to headquarter a company like ours. Ideally positioned between North America and the European markets, Bermuda is a well-developed reinsurance market that is a long-term leader in attracting capital. The Island has a sophisticated regulatory system that is supervised by the highly-regarded Bermuda Monetary Authority. It is also one of a handful of domiciles granted Solvency II equivalence by the EU. This is both a vote of confidence in the Island’s robust regulatory system, and a guarantee of access to the world’s largest market. How do you anticipate Bermuda will continue to adapt and evolve? Bermuda is committed to, and operates at, the highest level of transparency and cooperation in the world. This ranges from tax cooperation agreements, to meeting the OECD country-by-country reporting standards, to meeting public financial disclosure requirements. As a public company ourselves, we are entirely comfortable with and support these standards. Indeed, the Bermuda international market is dominated by companies listed on the NYSE, like us, the LSE or other major exchanges. What will be the main areas of growth for the Island’s risk transfer market? Bermuda pioneered technology-enabled catastrophe underwriting, capital markets convergence, and many of the other key innovations we have seen. Today the market is engaged in insuretech, and helping to close the global protection gap for natural disasters. The market will remain at the heart of industry innovation, and RenaissanceRe will be at the centre of things. BERMUDA’S REINSURANCE LEADERS Kevin J. O’Donnell has served as chief executive officer of RenaissanceRe since July 2013 and as president since November 2012. He is responsible for the oversight and management of the company’s reinsurance and insurance businesses. Prior to becoming president of RenaissanceRe Holdings, O’Donnell served as executive vice president and global chief underwriter from 2010. He acted as president of Renaissance Reinsurance from 2005, overseeing the company’s reinsurance lines, including property catastrophe and specialty reinsurance, as well as its joint ventures. O’Donnell has served as chief underwriting officer for the company’s key joint ventures, Top Layer Re and DaVinci Re. In 2009, he directed the launch of RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 at Lloyd’s. O’Donnell has been with the company since 1996, when he joined to lead the international underwriting and ceded reinsurance businesses. Prior to joining RenaissanceRe, O’Donnell was a vice president of Centre Financial Products, and an underwriter at SCOR. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Hamilton College and an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business. “The Bermuda international market is dominated by companies listed on the NYSE, like us, the LSE or other major exchanges.” Kevin O’Donnell Job title: President and chief executive officer Company: RenaissanceRe Timeline: 2013: Chief executive officer, RenaissanceRe 2012: President, RenaissanceRe Holdings 2010: Executive vice president and global chief underwriter, RenaissanceRe 2005: President, RenaissanceRe 1996: Head, international underwriting and ceded reinsurance business, RenaissanceRe 19 2016 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS
