Bermuda:Re+ILS Spring 2016

Bermuda:Re+ILS has always liked to champion the talent on Bermuda. Here, we showcase some of the most influential underwriting teams and brokers spanning three core lines of business. Bermuda has held a prominent position as a global risk transfer hub for as long as most underwriters and cedants can remember. It was first a trailblazer when it came to captives; then the likes of XL and ACE set up shop and rapidly expanded beyond their original remit. Later on, rafts of start-ups emerged following big losses in the US either as the result of hurricanes or terrorist attacks. Most recently, the Island has become the preferred domicile of choice for sidecars and other vehicles matching so-called alternative capital with insurance risks—in particular it is the preferred location for the booming insurance-linked securities (ILS) market. Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of Solvency II equivalence, which was secured late last year by Bermuda. That will ensure many doors remain open. In contrast, the US has no such arrangement in place just yet. None of this would have been possible without the Island’s uncanny ability to attract and retain talent. Perhaps it is not so uncanny given its obvious attractions but it is, and always has been, the case that Bermuda is only as good as the people working there. That was our primary motivation when compiling the following pages. They are designed to showcase the best of Bermuda’s considerable talent—its depth, its breadth and all the expertise available in all sectors of risk transfer. We pulled together these pages simply by asking companies for the relevant information and to answer a few basic questions. Not all were able to participate this year—the busy schedules of some executives meant that we could not pull together all the information we would have liked. Future plans The plan is that we will build on this both online in the short term and in the printed publication in future years. We want to offer readers a comprehensive guide to the underwriting and broking teams operating on Bermuda as well as a sense of their strengths and specialties. We may even offer some special recognition in the future for specific achievements. For firms that want to get involved in this project, please get in touch. We could also extend the list beyond this. In the following pages we profile the key underwriting teams on Bermuda in three sectors: property reinsurance, casualty reinsurance and specialty reinsurance. We have also profiled some of the Island’s main reinsurance brokers, detailing the sectors they cover and the key individuals working in them. What becomes apparent when flicking through these lists is exactly why Bermuda has remained at the forefront of the risk transfer world for so long. The talent is deep and extraordinary and the envy of most domiciles. Bermuda has not always had an easy ride. It faces constant competition from domiciles that yearn to create a risk transfer hub in the same style as Bermuda’s. It is not as easy as it looks. And even the right regulatory regime cannot replace the people, the teams, the undefinable network and resource of knowledge and expertise that makes Bermuda unique. 30 Spring 2016 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS Championing talent A guide to the depth and breadth of Bermuda’s underwriting talent and reinsurance broking teams
